Chemoembolization, therapy, using the arterial injection of ciplatin lipiodol mixture(Cisplatin-LP-TACE), was carried out on 31 cases of hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC) between January 1989 and December 1991, and assessment was made on the
anticancer
effects of this treatment method.
For the patients receiving LP-TACE, the value of longitudinal dimension multiplied by the vertical lengths of the tumor was calculated using a computerized tomograph before and after LP-TACE to determine the rate of tumor regression.
Among 28 evaluable patients, there were 2 complete response, giving a response rate of 7% and 6 partial response(21.5%). Six patients(21.5%) achieved disease stabilization and 14 cases(50%) had tumor progression.
One-year survival rates for TACE group was 35%, and median survival times was 8.1 months. Toxicity was moderate and consisited of nausea, vomiting, fever and abdominal pain.
In conclusion, Cisplatin-LP-TACE appears to be an effective therapy in treating patients with unresectable HCC and relatively well tolerated in most patients.
